Ronaldo's double goals, match winning record
An overhead kick, a penalty, two goals, and an assist—what more could a forward ask for?
Cristiano Ronaldo delivered all of that and more in Portugal’s 5-1 victory over Poland in the UEFA Nations League on Friday night. The 39-year-old star put on a masterclass performance, leading his team to a dominant win at the Porto do Dragão Stadium. His display not only helped secure the victory but also saw him make history. Ronaldo’s brace and all-around performance pushed his tally of international wins to 132, making him the player with the most international victories, surpassing Spain’s Sergio Ramos.
Portugal’s other goals came from Rafael Leão, Bruno Fernandes, and Pedro Neto. After Leão opened the scoring in the 59th minute, Ronaldo extended the lead in the 72nd minute with a cheeky 'Panenka' penalty. His leadership and clinical finishing played a crucial role in the comprehensive win, further cementing his legacy in international football.
The standout moment of the match for Al Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo came in the 87th minute, as he scored Portugal’s fifth goal. Vitinha delivered a precise cross from the right, lifting the ball just inside the six-yard box. Ronaldo, positioned slightly ahead of the ball, timed his run perfectly, drifting into the space and firing a right-footed shot into the far corner of the net. This stunning finish took Ronaldo’s international goal tally to 135, while his career total across all competitions now stands at 910—both all-time records since data collection began.
All five of Portugal’s goals, including two from Cristiano Ronaldo, came in the second half of the match. Reflecting on the contrasting halves, Portugal’s coach Roberto Martínez commented, "The first half was disappointing in terms of how we wanted to play. We lost our focus and allowed frustration to creep in. But the second half was the best I've seen from this team so far. We changed our mindset, sharpened our focus, and supported each other more. We didn’t let Poland get a foothold in the game."
Portugal secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with a dominant 5-1 victory over Poland, with one match still to play. Their final Group One clash will be against Croatia on October 18.
