Vinicius' Penalty miss, Brazil couldn't win even with 10-man Venezuela

Vinicius' penalty miss, Brazil couldn't win even with 10-man Venezuela

Ahead of Brazil's match against Venezuela, coach Dorival Jr. stated that he no longer sees a significant difference between small and big teams in modern football. His words were quickly tested, as Brazil struggled to break down their opponents.

Despite dominating possession and having a chance to take the lead through a penalty, Vinícius Jr. missed the opportunity. Venezuela, playing the final 10 minutes with just 10 men after a red card, held firm, and Brazil couldn’t find a way to score. As a result, Dorival's team had to settle for a frustrating 1-1 draw.

Brazil took the lead in the 43rd minute with a stunning free-kick from Rafinha. The Barcelona winger curled a brilliant left-footed shot that hit the inside of the right post, marking his first goal in Brazil's iconic No. 10 jersey. However, their advantage was short-lived. Just 38 seconds into the second half, substitute Telasco Sagavia leveled the score for Venezuela with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.

The match continued at a fast pace, and in the 63rd minute, Brazil had a golden opportunity to regain the lead. Vinícius Jr. was fouled inside the Venezuelan penalty area by goalkeeper Rafael Romo, earning Brazil a penalty after a VAR review. However, Romo made amends for his mistake by saving Vinícius' weak right-footed shot, which was aimed at the left post. The ball rebounded off the post, and Vinícius' follow-up effort also hit the woodwork, leaving Brazil to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Brazil ramped up their attacking pressure in the final moments, pushing hard for a late winner. In the fourth and seventh minutes of added time, Venezuela’s defense denied Vinícius Jr. and Estêvão with crucial blocks.

However, before those tense final moments, the hosts were reduced to 10 men. Substitute defender Alexander González was shown a red card in the 89th minute for a reckless challenge, striking Brazil's Gabriel Martinelli and Vinícius Jr. in the face. Despite the numerical advantage, Brazil couldn’t capitalize, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

In this high-paced encounter, both teams created plenty of scoring opportunities, with each side registering 11 chances. Despite having 60% of the possession, Brazil's inability to convert their chances left coach Dorival Jr. likely feeling frustrated. On the other hand, Venezuela could take pride in their resolute defensive performance.

In the dying moments of the match, Brazil had two golden opportunities to snatch a late winner. In the fourth minute of added time, Estêvão's left-footed shot was denied by goalkeeper Rafael Romo. Just a few minutes later, Vinícius Jr.'s header in the seventh minute also failed to break the deadlock. The Real Madrid forward had already struck the post in the first half, and despite his hat-trick performance in La Liga just days earlier, he couldn’t find the back of the net.

Vinícius remained Brazil’s main attacking threat throughout the match but was unable to score. Gerson also had two good opportunities, one of which sailed over the bar while the other was saved by Romo. Venezuela, too, had their chances, with notable efforts coming in the 58th and 65th minutes, but neither side could find a winner, and the match ended 1-1.

Venezuela ended a nine-match losing streak at home against Brazil in World Cup qualifiers with a hard-earned 1-1 draw. Interestingly, in three separate World Cup qualifying campaigns (1981, 1993, and 2024), Venezuela's opponents have been awarded penalties at home against Brazil, and their players have also received red cards in those matches.

Currently, Brazil sits in third place in the Latin American World Cup qualifying standings with 17 points from 11 matches. Argentina leads the table with 22 points from 10 games, while Colombia is second with 19 points, also from 10 matches. The top six teams will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the seventh-place team will enter the playoffs. Brazil's next match is against Uruguay next Wednesday morning, Bangladesh time.
