Yamal didn't even get close to the Ballon d'Or because he would need a stroke of bad luck.
Spain celebrated a stunning victory on Monday at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Of the last ten Ballon d'Or awards, seven have gone to Spanish players or clubs.
Rodri and Aitana Bonmatí took home the top honors for the men’s and women’s categories. Real Madrid and Barcelona were recognized as the best clubs for boys and girls, respectively. Carlo Ancelotti of Real Madrid was named the best men's coach, while Henny Hermoso, a forward for the Spanish women's team, received accolades for her outstanding charitable work. Barcelona's rising star, Lamine Yamal, won the Copa Trophy as Young Footballer of the Year.
The atmosphere in the theater was electric, filled with joy among the Spanish attendees, who eagerly posed for photos with their awards.
Women's Ballon d'Or winner Bonmatí and Copa Trophy winner Yamal are both Barcelona players. That night, they engaged in a conversation, during which Bonmatí's sister-in-law asked Yamal to touch the golden ball she had won. However, Yamal declined.
In a recent interview with the sports daily 'Diario Sport,' Bonmatí shared, "He (Yamal) asked me if my name was written on it in gold. I confirmed that it was. Then I asked him if he wanted to touch it. He replied, 'No, no.' It seemed like he didn’t want to put any bad luck on it."
Not wanting to put on a kufa suggests that Bonmatí's Ballon d'Or is special and should only be touched by her. Yamal may have been thinking that one day he will win the Ballon d'Or himself and will take it in his own hands for the first time.
Boys' Ballon d'Or winner and Yamal's national team teammate, Rodri, also believes that if anyone from Spain is destined to win the Ballon d'Or in the future, it will be Yamal. Rodri encouraged him, saying, "Keep working hard; everything is ahead of you. You'll win it soon."
